AirTag 2 Revealed: Unlocking the Future of Item Tracking
AirTag 2: What to Expect from the Next Generation
Overview
Apple's AirTag, a small item tracking device introduced four years ago, is expected to receive its first hardware upgrade with the launch of AirTag 2. The new model is rumored to be released sometime this year, potentially in May or June, coinciding with WWDC 2025.
Features and Enhancements
- Extended Range for Precision Finding: One of the key improvements will be an extended range for the Precision Finding feature, increasing from the current 10 to 15 meters to up to 60 meters. This will leverage the latest Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip found in iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9.
- Enhanced Anti-Stalking Measures: Apple is working on new anti-stalking features to prevent AirTags from being misused. Specifically, they aim to make it impossible to disable the internal speaker, a feature some have exploited to misuse the device.
- Form-Factor: There are no rumors suggesting changes to the form-factor of the AirTag 2, which remains small but not ideal for items like wallets compared to some third-party trackers.
Release Date
Leaker Kosutami has suggested that AirTag 2 will be released in May or June 2025, potentially in time for WWDC 2025.
