American Airlines Embraces Apple’s New AirTag Feature for Speedier Lost Luggage Recovery
AirTag Feature Enhanced by American Airlines
Starting with iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced a new 'Share Item Location' feature for AirTags, which allows users to share the location of their lost luggage more efficiently with airlines. This week, American Airlines, the busiest airline in the United States, has announced its support for this feature.
American Airlines handles more passengers per day than any other U.S. airline, making the adoption of this feature significant. AirTags have been useful for locating lost luggage, but until now, there was no efficient way to ensure airlines could locate the specific piece of luggage.
The 'Share Item Location' feature allows you to privately and securely share the location of your AirTag with authorized personnel at participating airlines. This should reduce the time it takes to recover misplaced luggage. To initiate a baggage claim, users can scan a QR code at the airline's baggage office.
Apple has worked closely with partner airlines to implement this feature, ensuring that access to shared locations is limited and secure. American Airlines reports that fewer than 1% of baggage is mishandled and usually returns within a day. The company anticipates that this new feature will further reduce recovery times.
