Apple's Expansion of Manufacturing to India Includes AirPods

Apple is set to expand its manufacturing capabilities in India by starting the production of AirPods at a Foxconn plant in Hyderabad as early as April. This move is part of Apple's strategy to diversify its supply chain, which has been ongoing for several years. The facility, approved by Foxconn with a Rs 3,500 crore ($400 million) investment in August 2023, will focus on exporting the produced AirPods to other countries.

Production of AirPods in India follows the successful manufacturing of iPhones in the country for export. This expansion is driven by several factors, including the vulnerability of supply chains to global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential for reduced tariffs. The Indian government has also supported this initiative by cutting import taxes on components used in production, making it more cost-effective for Apple.

The decision to manufacture AirPods in India aligns with Apple's broader strategy to reduce dependency on China and mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs.
