Apple's Environmental Progress: A Major Milestone in Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Apple has announced significant advancements towards its environmental goals. The company has surpassed a 60 percent reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2015 levels, making strides toward its ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Key achievements include:
- Renewable Energy: Apple's suppliers have brought online 17.8 gigawatts of renewable energy, avoiding 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024.
- Recycled Materials: The company has achieved nearly 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and cobalt in Apple-designed batteries, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of its products.
- Waste Reduction: Through the Zero Waste program, suppliers have redirected 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills in 2024, totaling 3.6 million metric tons since 2015.
- Water Conservation: Since 2013, Apple and its suppliers have saved over 90 billion gallons of fresh water, with a 42 percent average reuse rate in 2024 alone.
- Product Innovation: The new MacBook Air contains over 55 percent recycled content, while the Mac mini is the first carbon-neutral Mac. Customers can also choose carbon-neutral Apple Watch models.
In celebration of Earth Day, Apple is offering customers a 10 percent discount on accessories when they recycle eligible devices in-store from April 16 to May 16, 2025.
