Rumored Plastic Version of Apple Watch SE Stalled

A rumored plastic version of the Apple Watch SE, primarily aimed at kids, has reportedly hit roadblocks. According to Bloomberg, the project was initially planned to produce a less-expensive alternative using hard plastic instead of aluminum. The current Apple Watch SE retails for $249, which is more expensive than competing models like Samsung's low-cost smartwatch.

Apple's commitment to environmental policies has driven the company to explore more recyclable materials, leading to a redesign in 2022 with a color-matching 'nylon composite' back case. However, the team behind the plastic Apple Watch SE project has encountered issues with both cost and appearance. The proposed version is currently as expensive to produce as the existing model, and design concerns remain unresolved.

First rumored last year, it's unclear if these challenges will be addressed in time for a new version to launch by late 2025. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that a new Apple Watch SE and a third-generation Apple Watch Ultra would release before the end of 2025.
