Apple’s spatial computing future may not involve headsets after all
Apple’s Spatial Computing Journey Apple unveiled its first spatial computing product, Apple Vision Pro, at WWDC23 last June. Six months after shipping the product, Apple is rethinking its approach to headsets.
Possible next steps include:
- Creating more headsets: a cheaper Apple Vision headset (
Vision Air) with lower quality displays and materials, and a second-generation Apple Vision Pro with an M5 chip, better displays, and a lighter design. - Developing an iPhone accessory: removing built-in processing and battery from Apple Vision Pro and relying on the user’s iPhone. This approach is questionable due to high pricing concerns.
- Exploring alternative options like smart glasses (
Ray-Ban Smart Glassesstyle) or beefed-up AirPods with external cameras and AI integration.
Ultimately, Apple aims for fully featured AR glasses similar to Meta’s prototype Orion glasses.
