Behind Closed Doors: Google Shifts Android Development While Keeping AOSP Open for Contributions
Starting March 27, 2025, Google has moved the development of Android entirely behind closed doors by locking the aosp-main manifest and setting it to read-only. Developers are now advised to use the android-latest-release manifest for building and contributing to AOSP, which currently points to Android 15 QPR2. Despite this change, Google still welcomes contributions from developers through its usual online Gerrit system. The move is intended to streamline development and benefit the platform as a whole.
