Boost Your Android App Performance with 16 KB Memory Page Size Support

Discover how a simple change in memory management could revolutionize Android performance, from faster app launches to improved battery life.

Google's New Requirement for Android Apps

Starting November 1st, 2025, Google Play will mandate that all new apps and updates targeting Android 15+ support a 16 KB memory page size. This change is designed to enhance performance by reducing the overhead associated with memory management. Historically, Android has used a 4 KB page size, but larger pages can lead to significant improvements:

  • Faster App Launches: Improvements ranging from 3% to 30%.
  • Improved Battery Usage: An average gain of 4.5%.
  • Quicker Camera Starts: Launch times improved by 4.5% to 6.6%.
  • Speedier System Boot-Ups: Devices boot approximately 8% faster.

Device OEMs are adopting these larger page sizes as they add more RAM to optimize performance. Android 15 includes system support for this increased page size, which is already available for testing on Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series devices.

Google expects minimal adjustments for most apps:

  • Apps with no native code should be compatible without changes.
  • Apps using libraries or SDKs with native code may need updates.
  • Apps with native code may require recompilation with a recent toolchain and checks for low-level memory management issues.

Developers can verify memory page size support in the Play Console.
