Busting the Myth: No, Apple Didn’t Pre-Install Starlink on Your iPhone

Contrary to recent claims on TikTok, Apple has not installed Elon Musk's Starlink directly into iPhones. Instead, T-Mobile is using its 1900MHz (band 25) spectrum to integrate satellite support through Starlink for a limited number of customers in the United States. This integration does not require any special iOS updates beyond supporting the latest version of T-Mobile's network.

T-Mobile users can opt out of this feature by disabling it in their iPhone settings under Settings > Cellular > [Carrier] > turn off Satellite. Apple has also published documentation to clarify how iPhones work with carrier-provided satellite features, highlighting that the service is available on iPhone 14, 15, and 16 models, with the latest iOS version and a supported carrier.

The T-Mobile Starlink offering currently allows for text messaging when out of cellular range and is in beta. Users need to sign up manually on T-Mobile’s website. Future updates are expected to include mobile data capabilities. However, Starlink itself is not a mobile phone carrier; it remains an internet service provider (ISP).

Despite the confusion, users are encouraged to update to iOS 18.3 for important bug fixes and security patches.
