Epic Games' legal battle against Apple over App Store policies has cost the company more than $1 billion, with over $100 million in legal fees and significant lost revenue. The dispute began when Epic introduced its own in-app payment system, violating Apple’s 30% commission rule, leading to the removal of Epic's games from the App Store. After a court battle, while mostly favoring Apple, a judge ruled that developers must be allowed to use their own payment systems without(Apple) taking a cut. Despite complying with this ruling, Apple plans to appeal and has yet to restore Epic’s developer account or allow Fortnite back into the App Store. CEO Tim Sweeney believes the fight was essential for the future of digital economies, but Apple commentator John Gruber doubts that Apple will reinstate Fortnite anytime soon.
