Epic Games Launches Zero-Commission Plan and App Store Workaround, Challenges Apple’s Revenue Model
Epic Games is implementing two significant business moves in response to recent legal rulings against Apple's App Store practices. First, Epic will introduce a zero-commission policy for the first $1 million of revenue generated through its store per app year, followed by a 12% commission thereafter. This contrasts with Apple’s typical 15-30% commission and its Small Business Program, which reduces the rate to 15% on the first $1 million. Secondly, Epic is launching 'Epic Games Store Webshops' in June 2025, a feature that enables developers to direct users to web-based purchases, offering a more cost-effective alternative to in-app purchases and bypassing high platform fees. Players will also earn 5% Epic Rewards on all purchases made through these webshops. Both initiatives aim to provide developers with greater flexibility and lower costs while complying with new legal rulings.
