Europe Slams the Door on Unrestricted Loot Boxes with New Age Ratings
Starting this June, the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) board is implementing significant changes to how video games are rated across Europe. The organization is introducing interactive risk features as a new criteria, specifically targeting games that include paid random items, more commonly known as loot boxes. Under the revised rules, games containing these randomized purchase systems will automatically receive a higher minimum age rating to safeguard younger players. This regulatory update aims to provide clearer warnings to parents about gambling-like mechanics and reflects increasing pressure on developers to be transparent about monetization strategies that could influence vulnerable users.
