Google Maps Utilizes Dash Cam Footage for Road Data Updates
Google Maps is now using dash cam footage from vehicles to update road data including speed limits in an effort to improve its mapping features and keep things up-to-date.
Google Maps is now using dash cam footage to update road data, including speed limits. The company licenses short video clips from trusted third-party companies that use dash cams in their operations. This data is used to identify map-related details such as new speed limit signs with the help of AI, and then the footage is deleted. This effort seems to be limited to the UK only, with partnership with Geopost Vision and Nextbase. The process is fully opt-in for drivers and the footage is not published.
