Inside the iPhone 16e: Apple’s Breakthrough C1 Modem and Its Synergy with A18 Chip
The iPhone 16e marks a significant milestone for Apple with the introduction of its first-ever in-house cellular modem, the C1. Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, revealed that the C1 is just the beginning and will serve as a platform for future advancements. Unlike other modems from companies like Qualcomm, Apple focused on developing technology tailored to its products rather than matching external specifications.
A behind-the-scenes tour of Apple's modem testing labs provided by Andru Edwards showcased the rigorous evaluation process the C1 underwent. Key features highlighted include dynamic traffic management in congested networks, where the A18 chip can prioritize critical data tasks like sending photos or videos. The C1 is manufactured using advanced 4-nanometer and 7-nanometer fabrication technologies for its baseband modem and transceiver, respectively.
