Spotify Bypasses Apple's 30% Commission with Direct Purchases: A Major Win for Developers
Spotify has updated its app on iOS to include direct links for purchasing and price information, allowing users to avoid paying Apple's 30% commission on in-app purchases. This change comes after a court ruling on April 30, 2021, which required Apple to allow such functionality. Spotify spokesperson Jeanne Moran stated that this represents a significant milestone for developers seeking fair competition. The updated app, version 9.0.40, is now available and includes options for users to purchase subscriptions, upgrade, change, or delete their plans directly within the app. Despite complying with the judge's order, Apple has filed an appeal and is facing potential criminal contempt charges for violating court orders and lying about charging fees.
