Security researchers have unveiled 'usbliter8', a permanent hardware exploit targeting the SecureROM of Apple’s A12 and A13 Bionic chips. By leveraging a vulnerability in the USB Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode, attackers can achieve arbitrary code execution at the most fundamental level of the device's boot chain. Because the SecureROM is read-only memory burned into the silicon during manufacturing, this flaw cannot be fixed via software updates, potentially opening the door for permanent jailbreaks and sophisticated security research on devices like the iPhone XS and iPhone 11.
