AirPods Pro 2 as Hearing Aids in the UK
AirPods Pro 2 has received government approval to be used as over-the-counter hearing aids in the United Kingdom, effective from February 24, 2025. This feature addresses mild to moderate hearing loss and is available for free with a software update.
Key Features:
- Hearing Test: Users can perform a quick five-minute hearing test using their AirPods Pro 2 and an iPhone. The test generates a report with a number representing detected hearing loss for each ear.
- Hearing Profile: After the test, users can apply a personalized hearing profile to use their AirPods as hearing aids. This profile is also automatically applied when listening to music, movies, or other media on Apple devices.
- Audiogram in Health App: The audiogram generated from the test is saved in the Health app for future reference and discussion with healthcare professionals.
- Loud Sound Reduction: An additional feature that helps mitigate the impact of loud environmental sounds and prevent hearing damage. This is enabled automatically, independent of other Hearing Health features.
These advanced hearing health features are exclusive to AirPods Pro 2, which was released in late 2022. Earlier models like the first-generation AirPods Pro and AirPods 4, as well as AirPods Max and the entire Beats lineup, do not support these functionalities.
