Trump Compares UK Encryption Law to Chinese Practices During White House Meeting
President Trump has criticized the UK's attempt to force Apple to add a global backdoor to iCloud, likening it to practices typically associated with China. During an interview with The Spectator, Trump stated that he advised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer against implementing such measures. Trump’s Director of National Security, Tulsi Gabbard, raised concerns about the potential breach of a bilateral agreement by the UK's secret demand for Apple to create a backdoor, which would compromise Americans' personal encrypted data. In response, Apple removed Advanced Data Protection from the UK market but noted that they have never and will never build a backdoor or master key into their products or services. Interestingly, this feature remains available in China.
