Hackers linked to the Chinese government breached US telecom networks
Hackers backed by the Chinese government have broken into US telecom wiretap portals used by law enforcement agencies, gaining access to a wealth of sensitive information on American businesses and citizens.
Hackers linked to the Chinese government have compromised US telecom companies' law enforcement wiretap networks mandated under a 30-year-old federal surveillance law called Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). The group, known as Salt Typhoon, had access to systems at Verizon Communications, AT&T, and Lumen Technologies. Security analysts are still assessing the extent of data stolen during the breach, which is said to be significant. China has denied its involvement in the cyberattacks.
