$5 Billion Lawsuit Claims Apple Misleads Customers About Ebook Ownership

A law firm is seeking $5 billion in damages over alleged false advertising by Apple Books, claiming users are misled into thinking they own eBooks when they actually only have a revocable license.

A law firm has filed a $5 billion class action lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company misled consumers about purchasing ebooks through Apple Books. The plaintiffs allege they were led to believe they were buying books as if they were physical copies when in reality, they are only purchasing revokable licenses to access the content. However, the lawsuit is based on a misunderstanding of how digital book licensing works and ignores the fact that users agree to terms and conditions that clearly state the content is licensed rather than sold. The plaintiffs claim they would not have purchased the ebooks had they been aware of this distinction, but the reality is that Apple cannot remove books from users' devices once downloaded, even if a title is removed from the store. Similar licensing practices are also used by other ebook providers like Amazon Kindle and Kobo.
