Android's Next Big Leap: 16 KB Page Size for Faster Performance and Smoother User Experience

Google is enhancing Android's performance by introducing support for a 16 KB page size, leading to faster app launches and smoother user experiences.

Performance Boost for Android Devices with 16 KB Page Size

Google is implementing a performance boost on Android devices by introducing support for a 16 KB page size in memory management. This change, currently under broader testing, aims to reduce the overhead of managing memory, leading to several improvements:

  • Overall Performance Boost: Up to 5-10% improvement.
  • Lower App Launch Times: Average reduction of 3.16%, with some apps seeing up to a 30% improvement under memory pressure.
  • Reduced Power Draw: Average reduction of 4.56% during app launches.
  • Faster Camera Launch: Hot starts are 4.48% faster, and cold starts are 6.60% faster on average.
  • Improved System Boot Time: An average improvement of 1.5%, or about 0.8 seconds.

To support this change, Android 15 has been refactored to be page-size agnostic, allowing it to run on both 4 KB and 16 KB page sizes. Developers need to recompile their apps for 16 KB devices, but the same binary can run on both page sizes. The option is available in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1 for Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, though it requires a device wipe and unlocked bootloader.

Google is working with partners to enable this feature on more devices, and they expect wider adoption as OEMs produce devices with larger amounts of RAM. Currently, no production Android devices support the 16 KB page size, but the technology is expected to be available in the near future.
