Apple AirPods Max Firmware Update Brings Lossless Audio and Ultra-Low Latency
Apple Re-Launches AirPods Max Firmware with Lossless Audio Support
Apple has re-released a firmware update for the USB-C version of the AirPods Max, bringing lossless audio support. The initial release was hampered by a bug in iOS 18.4, which prevented the firmware from being downloaded and installed. The new build, version 7E101, also introduces ultra-low latency audio and wired playback using Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable.
To check the firmware version of your AirPods Max, go to Settings on your iOS device and look for the AirPods menu while the headphones are connected. To ensure a smooth update, follow these steps:
- Update to the latest version of iOS (18.4 or later) or macOS (15.4 or later).
- Connect your AirPods via Bluetooth.
- Ensure your device is on Wi-Fi.
- Plug your AirPods into the charger.
- Keep the headphones in their case near your device for at least 30 minutes.
- Check the firmware version again after this period.
Note that only the USB-C version of the AirPods Max will receive the lossless audio update.
