Apple Boosts Clean Energy Fund in China by $99 Million to Drive Green Manufacturing

Apple boosts its commitment to renewable energy in China with a $99 million investment, aiming to add 550,000 megawatt-hours of wind and solar power to the grid.

Apple Adds $99 Million to China Clean Energy Fund

Apple has announced a second phase of its investment in the China Clean Energy Fund, committing an additional $99 million. The initial fund, launched in 2018, involved a $300 million investment from Apple and 12 of its suppliers, aimed at connecting Chinese manufacturers with renewable energy sources.

The new phase aims to add 550,000 megawatt-hours of wind and solar power generation to China's grid. By 2024, the first phase had already created over 1 gigawatt of solar and wind projects across 14 provinces in China. This initiative is part of Apple's goal to become entirely carbon neutral by 2030, with about two-thirds of its production in China currently powered by renewable energy.

Apple has not disclosed which suppliers are involved in this second phase. However, the company has received recognition for its environmental efforts, including a UN Climate Action award and praise from Greenpeace. Despite these accolades, Apple faced criticism in 2023 for announcing the Apple Watch Series 9 as the first carbon-neutral product, which was described by a Chinese environmental group as 'climate-washing.'
