Apple Explores a Surface-Like Keyboard for iPad: What Does It Mean for the Future of iPads?

Apple explores a Surface-like keyboard design for iPad Pro with multiple installation modes, featuring a hinged accessory that could transform how you use your tablet.

Apple has been exploring a Microsoft Surface-like keyboard design for its iPad Pro and iPad Air models. A newly revealed patent application titled 'Hinged keyboard accessory having multiple installation modes for a tablet computing device' describes an accessory that can couple to the iPad in various configurations, featuring a traditional keyboard layout with electromechanical keys. Some of the drawings in the patent resemble Microsoft Surface devices but also include distinctly Apple elements, such as macOS interfaces and support for accessories like the Apple Pencil. While this patent indicates ongoing exploration into different form factors, it does not suggest that Apple will necessarily release a product based on these designs. The current Magic Keyboard remains the flagship accessory for iPad Pro and Air models.
