Apple Must Accelerate EV Integration in CarPlay for a Smoother Ride

Explore how CarPlay's EV support falls short and what Apple needs to do to enhance the driving experience for electric vehicle owners.

CarPlay's EV Support Needs Improvement Over the last decade, Apple’s CarPlay has become a standard feature in most new cars, with around 80% of new car buyers requiring it. However, when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs), CarPlay falls short in terms of functionality and support.

Issues with EV Routing

Despite existing features like battery range estimates, charging station POIs, and real-time charger availability being integrated into Apple Maps, these features are only available for a limited number of EV models. The current list includes the Porsche Taycan, Ford F150 Lightning, and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Limited Availability

The primary issue is the lack of integration between Apple and car manufacturers. This means that most EV owners cannot benefit from these advanced features, leading to increased range anxiety and a less user-friendly experience compared to traditional gas cars.

Manual Workarounds

For non-supported EVs, drivers rely on third-party apps or dual-appy setups, which are inconvenient and sometimes require paid subscriptions. Apple could improve this by offering manual input options for battery size and charge level, though this would be less seamless than automatic integration.

Missing Features

Even for supported models, CarPlay lacks crucial EV-specific features such as battery preconditioning, fine-grained route optimization, and detailed charger information including prices and capabilities. These features are available in competing systems like Google Maps on Android Auto.

Conclusion

Apple needs to expand its EV support in CarPlay to more car models and manufacturers. Additionally, adding missing features like battery preconditioning and advanced routing options would significantly enhance the user experience for EV owners.
