Apple slashes global emissions by over 60%, pushing ahead with 2030 carbon neutrality goal

Apple slashes 60% of its global greenhouse gas emissions, accelerating its journey toward carbon neutrality by 2030.

Apple Cuts More Than 60% of its Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Apple has announced a significant reduction in its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels, just in time for Earth Day. This progress is part of the company's ambitious 'Apple 2030' initiative, which aims to make Apple carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030.

Key highlights of the initiative include:

  • Renewable Energy: 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity are now online in Apple's global supply chain, a 17% increase from the previous year.
  • Emission Reductions: In 2024, Apple managed to avoid an estimated 41 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions through various measures, including cleaning up its electricity supply and working with suppliers to reduce production carbon. Display and semiconductor suppliers reduced emissions by 8.4 million metric tons.
  • Waste Management: Apple suppliers redirected 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills in 2024.
  • Water Conservation: The company and its suppliers saved 14 billion gallons of fresh water in 2024, bringing the total to 90 billion since 2013. Apple plans to replenish 100% of freshwater withdrawals in high-stress locations within the next five years.
  • Recycled Materials: The new MacBook Air is comprised of 55% recycled content, making it the most sustainable Apple product to date. The company has also surpassed its 2025 goals for using 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries.
  • Customer Incentives: To encourage recycling, Apple is offering a 10% discount on eligible accessories when customers recycle their old devices at participating Apple Stores from now through May 16.
