Apple Triumphs in Patent Dispute with AliveCor, Secures Future of Apple Watch Health Features

Apple Wins Patent Battle Against AliveCor
A federal court has ruled in favor of Apple in its long-standing patent dispute against AliveCor. The ruling invalidates AliveCor's claims that Apple infringed on its patented information, particularly regarding the AFib detection feature in the Apple Watch Series 4 and later models. This decision prevents a potential total import ban on the Apple Watch.
Apple expressed gratitude to the Federal Circuit for its careful consideration of the case. The company highlighted its commitment to developing industry-leading health, wellness, and safety features that have benefited millions of users. Apple emphasized its intention to continue providing important heart monitoring features to its customers.
The dispute began in 2020 when AliveCor accused Apple of infringing on its intellectual property. In 2022, the US Patent Office's Trial and Appeals Board initially sided with Apple, but an ITC judge later recommended a full review. The ITC found Apple guilty of patent infringement in December 2022, imposing a Limited Exclusion Order. However, this order was suspended pending further reviews.
Apple retaliated by filing a countersuit against AliveCor, claiming that the mobile ECG firm had infringed on its technology. In 2024, Apple won an antitrust lawsuit filed by AliveCor when a US District Judge ruled in favor of Apple, confirming that it did not violate any AliveCor patents.
AliveCor is reportedly deeply disappointed with the ruling and is examining all available legal options, including potential appeals.
