Apple Watch Owners: Check If You're Due a Share of $20M Class Action Settlement

A major class action lawsuit against a tech giant over display issues in early wearables models has finally reached a $20M settlement, potentially offering payouts to eligible owners.

Class Action Lawsuit Against Apple for Defective Apple Watch Models

In 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple, alleging defects in early Apple Watch models that could cause the display to crack or detach from the casing. The issues first emerged in 2017 with the original Apple Watch ('Series 0'), where swollen batteries pushed the display up from the casing. Apple responded by offering a free three-year extended warranty for this issue.

The same problem affected some Series 2 models, particularly the 42mm versions of Sport, Nike+, Hermès, and Edition models. Apple offered free service for this issue but did not extend the warranty. Additionally, some Series 3 GPS models exhibited visible stripe markings on the display, potentially due to swollen batteries.

Despite these issues, Apple refused coverage for cracked or detached displays, labeling them as accidental damage. The lawsuit alleged that Apple was aware of the defects in Series 0 to Series 3 models but denied their existence and refused warranty claims.

$20M Settlement

Apple has now agreed to a settlement worth $20M, though it strongly disagrees with the claims made against these early generation models. The payout will range from $20 to $50 per eligible claim, depending on the number of people who file claims.

Eligibility and Claim Process

To qualify for the settlement, you must:

  • Have owned an affected Apple Watch model in the US (Original, Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3)
  • Have reported the issue to Apple between April 24, 2015, and February 6, 2024

Apple will automatically notify eligible individuals. To ensure your payment details are up to date, visit the provided link after receiving a notification from Apple by April 10, 2025.
