Apple's Billion-Dollar Bet: Investing Heavily in Nvidia Servers for Advanced AI Development

Summary Apple, despite its previous claims of using exclusively Apple Silicon servers for AI operations, is reportedly making a significant investment in Nvidia's technology. Analysts from Loop Capital, specifically Ananda Baruah, have revealed that Apple is spending approximately $1 billion to purchase Nvidia NVL72 servers, which are designed for generative AI and large language models (LLMs). These servers, not yet available to the public, are said to contain 36 Grace CPUs and 72 Blackwell GPUs. The report suggests that Apple may be pre-ordering these systems primarily for development purposes, although their exact use remains unclear.
Apple's decision to invest in Nvidia servers seems to contradict earlier statements by Craig Federighi, who emphasized the importance of using Apple Silicon servers for maintaining privacy and setting a new standard for cloud processing. Federighi highlighted the company's efforts in building custom data center solutions and a unique trust model, which are critical components of Apple's AI strategy.
