Apple's Bold Move: The iPhone 16e and the End of Qualcomm Dependency

Apple Ends Its Qualcomm Dependency with the New C1 Modem Chip
Apple and Qualcomm's Tumultuous Relationship
For over 15 years, Qualcomm's modem chips powered Apple's iPhones, enabling wireless connectivity to cellular networks. However, the relationship has been marked by disputes over royalties, patent fees, and personal tensions. High-profile legal battles began in 2017 when Apple sued Qualcomm for overcharging on patent royalties.
Pivoting to Intel and In-House Modems
In 2019, a new agreement between Apple and Qualcomm ended their legal battle but left Intel out of the picture. Apple later acquired Intel's modem business for $1 billion to accelerate its in-house modem development.
The C1 Modem: A Significant Milestone
The iPhone 16e is the first Apple device to feature an Apple-designed C1 modem, marking a significant step towards independence from Qualcomm. While the C1 lacks support for millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G technology, Apple is developing a second-generation modem with mmWave support for future models.
Future Plans and Impact on Qualcomm
Apple aims to replace Qualcomm modems entirely by 2027, integrating the C1 into more devices and introducing its Ganymede and Prometheus modems in the coming years. This move will save Apple billions annually, as it currently pays around $31 per modem and patent fees.
Qualcomm's Response
Qualcomm is preparing for life without Apple as a customer by diversifying into other markets such as automotive, PCs, and smart devices. The company expects to supply modems for just 20% of iPhones by 2026 and none at all by 2027.
