Apple's Enchanting Robot Lamp: A Lifelike Companion for Your Desk

Apple's Lifelike Robot Lamp: A Fusion of Elegance and Functionality
Apple Machine Learning Research has unveiled a prototype of a lifelike robot lamp in a short video and a twelve-page paper. The robot, which resembles Pixar's mascot Luxo Jr., showcases expressive and functional movements designed to enhance user engagement. Named ELEGNT (Expressive and Functional Movement Design for Non-Anthropomorphic Robot), the robot’s movements are fluid and convey a gentle, curious demeanor.
The video demonstrates how users can control the lamp through gestures such as waving, pointing, and pushing to adjust its position and focus. It also showcases advanced functionalities like switching from a desk lamp to a projector, displaying relevant tutorials for tasks like 3D printing. The robot can even respond to verbal commands, such as checking the weather by turning to look out a window.
A user study found that expression-driven movements significantly enhance user engagement and perceived qualities of the robot, particularly in social-oriented tasks. This prototype is part of Apple’s ongoing robotics research, with potential for a commercial release as early as 2026 or 2027, priced around $1,000.
