Apple's Next-Gen C2 Modem Set to Power iPhone 18 Pro Series in 2026
Apple’s 5G Modem Plans for iPhone 18 Pro Models
Apple is expected to introduce a new version of its in-house 5G modem, the C2 chip, in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models in 2026. This follows the debut of the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e this year.
-
C1 Modem: Launched with the iPhone 16e, it combines 4nm baseband technology with 7nm transceiver technology. Lab tests show that it is more efficient and uses less power compared to Qualcomm’s modems but lacks support for higher 5G mmWave speeds.
-
C2 Modem: Expected to be included in the iPhone 18 Pro series, this new modem will likely offer improved performance and efficiency.
-
Deployment Plans: While it’s unclear whether the base iPhone 18 model will get the C1 chip or continue to use Qualcomm’s modems, Apple may also introduce the C1 chip in other products like cellular versions of the iPad and Apple Watch before expanding its use in iPhones.
Apple is taking a cautious approach to ensure that its modems meet high standards, especially given their crucial role in smartphone performance.
