Apple's Standing Desks Advocacy Gains Support from New Study

A large-scale study has found that spending a certain proportion of your working day standing offers health benefits, adding weight to Apple's advocacy for regular standing during the workday.

Apple's advocacy for regular standing during work hours is supported by a new study that found health benefits associated with it. The research tracked the health data of over 83,000 people in the UK over an average period of about seven years and determined that spending some time standing rather than sitting can reduce risks of cardiovascular diseases and orthostatic circulatory disease.

The participants wore wrist-based accelerometer devices for at least four days which were calibrated to indicate different activities such as sitting or standing during waking hours. The results indicated a significant reduction in the risk of various health conditions, including those related to circulation and heart health when a person spends time standing compared to sitting for long periods.

Apple has been promoting regular standing during work hours through the reminders sent via Apple Watch and making sit-stand desks a standard feature at its Apple Park campus. This study provides support for their stance on the importance of changing positions and incorporating movement throughout one's day to promote overall health.
