Apple pulls Advanced Data Protection from the UK in response to government demands, affecting encryption for several iCloud categories while maintaining end-to-end encryption for critical data.

Apple’s Changes to Encryption in the UK
Apple has removed its Advanced Data Protection feature in the UK following a government order to build a worldwide backdoor into iCloud encryption. The company chose not to comply with the order and instead withdrew the feature.
Key Points:
- Advanced Data Protection: This optional feature, introduced in December 2022, provided additional end-to-end encryption for more data categories beyond the default 15. It has been removed in the UK, meaning these additional categories (such as iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes) are now covered by standard data protection.
- Standard Data Protection: This is the default setting for all users. It ensures that iCloud data is encrypted both in transit and at rest. Apple can decrypt this data on your behalf if needed (e.g., when signing into a new device or recovering data after forgetting a password).
- Still End-to-End Encrypted: Despite the removal of Advanced Data Protection, several critical categories remain end-to-end encrypted by default, including Passwords and Keychain, Health data, Messages in iCloud, and more.
- Impact on Users: Most users likely did not opt into Advanced Data Protection. Those who did will need to disable it to continue accessing their iCloud account. Apple will provide more details on the process.
This decision highlights the ongoing tension between tech companies and governments over encryption and data privacy.
