Busting Tariff Myths: Trump’s China Tariffs Not as Dire for Big Tech as They Seem

Despite some headlines suggesting otherwise, President Donald Trump has not increased tariffs on Chinese imports to a blanket 245%. The figure mentioned in a White House fact sheet refers to the maximum tariff applied across various categories of goods. For instance, there's a pre-2025 tariff of 100% on items like syringes and needles, and other products such as clothing and solar panels face tariffs ranging from 7% to 100%. Apple and other big tech companies are exempt from these tariffs. Trump has been involved in a back-and-forth with China over tariffs, which have increased from 104% to 145% at different points. However, the latest move is not as severe as initially reported. Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Minister Lin Jian emphasized that trade wars have no winners and called for equality, respect, and mutual benefit in negotiations.
