Apple has officially launched the next-generation CarPlay, now called CarPlay Ultra. This major update introduces deeper integration, customizable designs, and new features that take control of all the driver's screens in a car.

Over a dozen automakers have committed to supporting CarPlay Ultra, including:

  • Aston Martin (first to launch)

As of May 2025, CarPlay Ultra is available in Aston Martin cars in the United States and Canada through new car purchases or software updates for existing owners.

Features and Design

Visual Customization

CarPlay Ultra offers a unique, customizable user interface tailored to each automaker. For example, Apple designers collaborated with Aston Martin to create an interface that blends both brands' aesthetics. The design covers the gauge cluster, center screen, and more, including themes and wallpapers.

Widget Screen

A dedicated widget screen powered by your iPhone can display information such as Calendar, Weather, Reminders, and more on the car's center screen or gauge cluster.

Deep Integration

  • Vehicle App: Manages settings like climate, tire pressure, drive modes, and more within the CarPlay Ultra interface.
  • Physical Controls: Ties in with physical buttons for media, climate, performance modes, etc.
  • Siri Support: Allows voice control over various vehicle functions.

Hands-on Impressions

Top Gear and MotorTrend have published detailed videos showcasing CarPlay Ultra's features in action.

Future Rollouts and Backward Compatibility

CarPlay Ultra will roll out to other automakers, with specific timelines yet to be announced. Apple also confirms that the existing CarPlay will continue to be supported as CarPlay Ultra is phased in.
