Cycling Just Got Easier: Apple Maps Expands UK and Ireland Coverage

Expansion of Apple Maps Cycling Directions in the UK and Ireland
Apple Maps has enhanced its support for cycling directions across the United Kingdom and Ireland as of February 13, 2025. Previously, this feature was limited to a few U.S. cities and had patchy coverage in the UK. However, a recent backend update now allows users to plot full cycling journeys throughout the region.
Key features of Apple Maps cycling directions include:
- Steep Hill Warnings: Alerts for steep hilly zones to help cyclists prepare.
- Footpath Navigation: Highlights sections where walking on the footpath may be required.
- Unpaved Road Alerts: Identifies unpaved road areas that might be uncomfortable for cycling.
- Customizable Routes: Options to avoid busy roads or hills, with a preview of elevation, distance, and estimated time of arrival (ETA).
To use this feature, select the 'bicycle' icon in the Directions panel inside Apple Maps. It's worth noting that unlike automobile navigation, Apple Maps cycling directions do not support multiple stop routes.
