Digital Loot Controversy: Why US Game Ratings Refuse to Change

While Europe revamps game ratings to highlight paid loot boxes, the US decides to keep its current system to avoid consumer confusion.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has announced it will not adopt the new changes implemented by the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system regarding in-game purchases. Starting this summer, PEGI will factor in paid random items, such as loot boxes, when assigning age ratings to video games in Europe. However, the ESRB maintains that its current labeling system is sufficient and that changing age ratings based on digital monetization could lead to confusion among parents and consumers in the United States.
