EU Takes Action: Apple Must Enhance Interoperability with Third-Party Devices

EU mandates Apple to enhance interoperability with third-party devices like smartwatches and headphones, setting a six-month timeline for compliance under the Digital Markets Act.

The EU Commission has announced proceedings under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) to compel Apple to improve support for third-party connected devices like smartwatches, headphones, and VR headsets with iPhone and iPad. The commission will specify how Apple should provide interoperability with iOS functions such as notifications and device pairing within six months. This is the first time specification proceedings have been undertaken under the DMA, aimed at guiding Apple towards effective compliance through constructive dialogue. Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s executive vice president of competition policy, emphasized that this process will provide clarity for Apple, developers, and third-parties. Apple has already announced support in iOS 18 for an AirPods-like setup experience for compatible third-party accessories, which could be seen as a step in the right direction. However, if Apple fails to comply, it can face remediations and fines.
