Gemini 2.5 Flash Hits a Snag: File Uploads Temporarily Disabled for Free Users

Free users of Gemini 2.5 Flash are experiencing a sudden loss of file upload functionality, affecting document analysis and other features, with the issue expected to be resolved soon.

Summary

Over the last day, free users of the Gemini 2.5 Flash (preview) app have encountered an issue where they can no longer upload files. On both Android and iOS, the 'plus' menu has the Files and Drive options grayed out, while the web version only shows the image upload button. This means that features like analyzing documents, Talk Live with, and generating Audio Overviews (which now support over 45 languages) are unavailable.

The issue does not affect Gemini 2.0 Flash or 2.5 Pro (preview), which still allow file uploads but have their own usage limitations for free users. Paid Advanced users can still upload files in Gemini 2.5 Flash. The problem is expected to be a bug and should be resolved soon.

Related Information:

  • Gemini Live is rolling out to Google Workspace accounts.
  • Gemini app has moved 2.5 Flash and Pro into 'preview'.
  • Image editing features are becoming more widely available.
  • A new iPad app for Gemini is now available.
