Gemini App Upgrades: ‘Talk Live about’ Images, Files, and YouTube Now Widely Available

Gemini app's 'Talk Live about' feature now supports images, files, and YouTube videos, making it more versatile for Android users.

Gemini App Rolls Out 'Talk Live about' Feature

In January, the Gemini Live app introduced a new "Talk Live about this" feature, which has now become more widely available on Android devices. This update expands the app's capabilities beyond voice input to include:

  • Images: Users can upload images from their gallery or use the camera and tap the 'Talk Live about this' chip.
  • Files: Supported file formats (TXT, DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, HWP) can be uploaded or opened in Google Files (or Samsung Notes), with the Gemini overlay activated.
  • YouTube: Users can open the Gemini overlay while a YouTube video is playing or paste a link into the app. The feature supports videos up to 2 hours long and uses captions for context.

After selecting an image, file, or video, the fullscreen Gemini Live interface opens with a preview, allowing users to ask questions and receive answers based on the specific content.

The feature initially rolled out to Pixel 9, Galaxy S24, and S25 devices. With the March 2025 Feature Drop, it became available for Pixel 6 and newer models. Availability has been gradually increasing, and as of today, it is also accessible on older Pixel and Samsung devices with the free Gemini tier.

Additionally, Google has rolled out more compact Gemini Live buttons without text labels in the latest stable version (16.11) of the Google app.

For developers, Gemini 2.5 Pro has entered a public preview phase in the Gemini API in Google AI Studio, offering increased rate limits for building applications with this new model. The experimental version of Gemini 2.5 Pro was launched 10 days ago, with free access available since last Saturday.
