Gemini Takes the Stage: Google's AI Assistant Replaces Google Assistant on Chromebooks
Summary Starting with ChromeOS 134, Gemini will replace Google Assistant on Chromebooks. Google Assistant, which debuted on the Pixelbook in 2017 and rolled out to other devices in 2019, allowed users to control device settings, set reminders, take notes, and play music through a floating window accessed via an icon or key combo.
With Gemini, the experience shifts to a Progressive Web App (PWA) that can be launched by tapping on the Assistant icon or using the same key combo. However, Gemini lacks support for voice commands like 'Hey Google' and offers similar functionality to what's available on gemini.google.com. This includes access to @Gmail and @Google Drive.
While a voice-first assistant may be less critical on Chromebooks, the quick access to a chatbot is seen as more beneficial for productivity. Gemini is also expected to expand to other platforms like Wear OS and headphones, with powered experiences coming to speakers, displays, and TVs.
