Google Rolls Out File Upload and Analysis for Free Gemini Users

  • Introduction of Feature: Initially available for paid Advanced subscribers, free users of the Gemini AI platform are now gaining the ability to upload and analyze files.
  • User Experience: Upon rollout, a prompt will appear in the Android app and on gemini.google.com, inviting users to 'Upload files to get quick summaries and actionable insights.'
  • File Handling: Users can choose from their Google Drive or directly upload via web or mobile. The platform supports various file formats including plain text, code files (C, CPP, PY, JAVA, PHP, SQL, HTML), documents (DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, DOT, DOTX, HWP, HWPX, Google Docs), tabular data (CSV, TSV), and spreadsheets (XLS, XLSX, Google Sheets).
  • Functionality:
    • Summarization: Users can upload documents to get quick summaries and ask questions about the content, enhancing search capabilities.
    • Spreadsheets: Insights and chart creation based on uploaded spreadsheet data are available.
  • Android Integration: Features like 'Ask about this PDF' in Files by Google and 'Talk Like about this' for Pixel and Galaxy S24/S25 devices enhance user interaction.
  • Availability: The feature is rolling out to free Gemini accounts but is not yet widely accessible. It only works with the Gemini 2.0 Flash model, while the older 1.5 Flash model will soon be discontinued.
  • Advanced Features: Deep Research, custom Gems, Saved Info, and Recall remain exclusive to Advanced subscribers.
