Google Home Gemini Extension Expands with Enhanced Smart Home Controls

The Google Home Gemini Extension has transitioned from the Public Preview program and is now rolling out to all users, with full availability expected over the coming weeks. This extension enhances smart home control within the Gemini app for both Android and iOS devices, offering a more conversational interface to manage lights, climate controls, window coverings, media devices, and other smart home appliances.
Key features of the update include:
- Conversational Controls: Users can issue natural language commands to control various smart home devices. For example, 'Turn on all the living room lights except the armchair light' or 'Is the back porch light still on?'
- Lock Screen Access: Control non-sensitive devices like smart lights directly from the phone’s lock screen without unlocking.
- Enhanced Thermostat Controls: The Gemini app now features updated thermostat tiles with color changes to reflect heating and cooling modes, matching the Google Home app.
- Volume and Media Control: Users can adjust volume levels and control playback on connected entertainment devices.
- Complex Queries and Device Status: The extension supports managing multiple commands and asking questions about device status, enhancing user convenience.
Example commands for various devices are provided, including lights, switches, thermostats, fans, window coverings, media devices, and other smart appliances.
