Google Maps Cracks Down on Fake Reviews with Advanced AI Detection

Google Maps is stepping up its fight against fake reviews with advanced AI, detecting and warning users about suspicious five-star ratings in the US, UK, and India.

Google Maps Expands Fake Review Warnings

Google Maps has detailed its progress in preventing and removing deceptive content, particularly fake reviews. Leveraging AI, the platform is now better equipped to detect businesses that purchase fake five-star reviews from individuals who have never visited the establishment. This improved detection system revisits reviews more frequently to identify new abuse patterns, even months after they were posted.

In the United States, United Kingdom, and India, Google Maps is now flagging instances where it has recently removed suspicious five-star reviews. If fake engagement is detected, reviews may be temporarily turned off. Last year, over 900,000 accounts were restricted for repeated policy violations.

Next month, these warnings will expand globally. Additionally, Google has trained a new model using Gemini to identify potentially suspicious profile edits. This model can learn from a few examples and apply this knowledge across various business categories and languages, helping block thousands of suspicious Business Profile edits.

In 2024, Google's ML algorithms blocked or removed over 240 million policy-violating reviews, with the majority being removed before they were seen. The improved detection system also blocked or removed over 70 million policy-violating edits to places and more than 12 million fake Business Profiles.
