Google Meet Enhances Video Calls with Dynamic Layouts for a Modern Grid Experience

Google Meet introduces Dynamic layouts, modernizing the grid with smarter face prioritization and efficient tile placement.

Dynamic Layouts for Google Meet

Google is updating Google Meet with a new Dynamic layouts feature, which aims to modernize and optimize the grid view during video meetings. Key highlights include:

  • Portrait Tiles: Automatically prioritize faces by cropping backgrounds.
  • Grouping Multiple Faces: Can create individual tiles for up to three people in the same room.
  • Active Speaker Detection: AI highlights the speaker without special hardware.
  • Efficient Layouts: Minimizes unused space and allows color-sampled tile theming for off-camera users.
  • Pin Limit Increase: Increased from 3 to 6 tiles.
  • Self-View Preferences: Users can set preferences for how their video is displayed, including the option to prevent cropping by others.
  • Larger Room Tiles: When not in Dynamic mode.
  • Companion Mode: Allows users to label their tiles with names on Google Meet hardware devices.
  • Layout Options: Users can switch between Auto (dynamic) and Tiled (legacy) layouts.

These updates are designed to enhance the hybrid work experience, making it easier for remote participants to see and identify in-room users. The features will roll out over the coming weeks and are available for all Google Workspace customers and personal Google account users.
