Google Pixel Gets Enhanced with Broader Rollout of 'Identity Check' Security Feature

Google's new Identity Check feature adds an extra layer of security by requiring biometric authentication for sensitive actions on Pixel phones, rolling out more widely to Android 15 devices.

Identity Check Rolling Out Wider on Google Pixel

Google's new security feature, Identity Check, is now being rolled out more widely to Google Pixel phones. Initially announced last week, this feature enhances device security by requiring explicit biometric authentication (fingerprint or face) for accessing sensitive features and settings when the user is away from trusted locations like Home or Work.

*Key Features:

  • Access Saved Passwords and Passkeys: Requires biometric verification to access saved passwords and passkeys with Google Password Manager.
  • Change Sensitive Settings: Biometric authentication is needed to change screen lock, biometrics, factory reset, and theft protection settings.
  • Device Security: Limits what someone who knows your device PIN can do, reducing the risk of unauthorized changes and Google Account takeovers.
  • Setup Process: Users need to be signed in to a Google Account, have a screen lock, biometrics, trusted places (shared with Extend unlock), and enable Phone Number Verification. The setup guide is available in the Settings app under Security & privacy > Device unlock > Theft protection > Identity Check.

*Rollout:

  • Currently rolling out via Google Play services to Android 15 Pixel phones.
  • Expected to be available on Samsung One UI 7 devices and other Android phones later this year.

Additional Security Measures:

  • Joins other security features like Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock from last year.
