Google Play Books Skips Apple’s Commission with New External Link Feature

Google Play Books Now Links to External Website to Avoid Apple's Commission
Google has updated the Google Play Books app to include a 'Get book' link that redirects users to the Google Play Store for purchases, bypassing Apple’s in-app purchase system. This change allows Apple device owners to buy ebooks and audiobooks without Apple taking its usual 30% commission.
The update is part of a broader effort by Google to comply with new guidelines for 'reader apps,' which permit links to external websites for purchases. The app now displays a warning when users leave the app to complete the purchase on the Google Play Store, where they can use their existing Google account and payment methods.
Additionally, the Google Play Family Library feature is supported, ensuring that family members can share purchased books across devices, including Apple devices. This move enhances user experience by providing clear paths for account management and purchases, which were previously restricted under Apple’s strict app store policies.
The implementation of this update raises questions about future competition in the ebook market and whether other providers, like Apple, will respond with similar measures or expand their services to Android.
