Google Refreshes Quick Capture Widget for a Smoother Android Experience

Google Keep's Quick capture widget for Android gets a fresh Material You redesign, featuring new shapes and icon placements.

Google Keep Widget Redesign for Android

Google is rolling out a redesign of the Quick capture widget for its Google Keep app on Android. The new design aligns with Google’s Tier 1 widget guidelines, ensuring that the background extends to all four edges of the grid.

  • Design Changes:

    • Previously, only the plus button was housed in a rounded square container. Now, everything is placed within shapes: a vertical pill for the plus icon and rounded rectangles for other icons.
    • The 4×1 configuration includes shortcuts for text notes, lists, audio, and drawings. A new photo note option requires a 5×1 configuration, which might be less convenient for some users.
    • The flower Material You shape has been enlarged, and the 3×1 configuration has also been made larger.
  • Availability:

    • This redesign is part of version 5.25.132.01.90 of Google Keep for Android but includes a server-side component, so it may not be available to all users immediately.
  • Related Updates:

    • Other recent updates include 'text notes by default' and an audio shortcut feature.
    • There have also been changes to note reloading and corner rounding on Android.
    • Google is exploring a new 'handwritten notes' format.
