Google Revamps APIs for Digital Photo Frames, Prioritizing User Privacy

Google is updating its APIs to improve privacy, affecting third-party digital photo frames, but offers a new solution designed specifically for these devices.

Google Photos and Digital Photo Frames

  • API Changes Impacting Third-Party Devices: Google is implementing API changes that will break integrations with third-party digital photo frames, such as those made by Aura and Cozyla. These changes were announced in September.

  • Loss of Direct Integration: Previously, users could browse their Google Photos library directly within the companion app for these devices and select images to be transferred. The 'auto-add' feature allowed new photos from pre-selected albums to be automatically sent to the digital frame. Now, Aura owners have to manually download and upload pictures.

  • Google's Response: In a statement, Google emphasized that the API changes are aimed at improving user privacy. They also mentioned having APIs specifically designed for digital photo frames and a program to assist partners in updating their products.

  • Potential New Experience: The new experience might be similar to the slideshow feature available on Nest Hubs, Google/Android TV, Chromecast, and the Pixel Tablet. This can be managed directly within the Google Photos app through Settings > Apps & devices > Photo frames.

  • Uncertainty of Timelines: It is unclear if these updates will be ready by the time the API changes take effect.
